The three key carotenoids: Zeaxanthin, Luteinand also Meso-Zeaxanthin (Mz)sources
The three macula pigments protect the eye by absorbing blue light and neutralising free radicals. Therefore, a healthy supply of them is essential to those with or without macula degeneration. MP is composed of the dietary carotenoids lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z), and meso-zeaxanthin (MZ). MZ is the most centrally located of the macular carotenoids, and constitutes one third of overall MP.

Macushield research increasingly shows that Macushield vitamins improve the amount of macula pigment in the eye due to the 3 key carotenoids macula(zeaxanthin, lutein and meso-zeaxanthin (Mz)), which are all generated naturally by ourselves. However, generation of Mz appears to decline with age.
What are the roles of Lutein and Zeaxanthin?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are dietary carotenoids that filter damaging high-energy blue wavelength light from the visible-light spectrum by as much as 90%. Found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, lutein and zeaxanthin are also antioxidants and protect against damage caused by free radicals to help your eyes.
Why is Meso-zeaxanthin (Mz) so vital?
Meso-zeaxanthin is the 3rd component of the macula pigment and is only found at the centre where vision is sharpest. Meso-zeaxanthin is obtained by the conversion of lutein to meso-zeaxanthin in the macula. It is not found in a typical diet but is found in shrimps and certain fish types like salmon, halibut, trout and sea bass. Meso-zeaxanthin is increasingly being recognised as a more powerful neutralizer of free radicals than either lutein or zeaxanthin.
Macular pigment (MP) is a yellow, dietary-derived pigment, which accumulates at the macula, the region of the retina which facilitates central and detailed, colour vision. At the macula, MP acts as a pre-receptoral filter of short wavelength ‘blue' light and a powerful antioxidant.
So, let's compare MacuShield: Macushield vitamins are unique in including all three of these carotenoids: Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-zeaxanthin (MZ)). It is actually the Mz that is unique to MacuShield (meso-zeaxanthin (MZ)). This ingredient is not found in any other supplements, which is what makes Macushield unique and different to products like icaps, Ocuvite, Macusan or Nutrof.

Feedback so far for the Macushield Supplement
has been very impressive. The term ‘Miracle cure’ has been used by much of the media and there have indeed been some impressive results, many of which we have heard first hand. However, Macusheild
should be seen as a dietary supplement that helps to keep the health of your macula. There is some belief that it may actually repair the macula although research is currently in progress to confirm this under clinical conditions.
Macushield research continues to provide encouraging results and it there are no known side-effect. However, we recommend that if you suffer from Macula Degeneration, you should seek advice from your doctor or medical practitioner.
Each Softgel capsule includes: Meso-Zeaxanthin (10mg), Lutein (10mg), Zeaxanthin (2mg). Other ingredients include: Sunflower seed Oil, Capsule Shell (Gelatin), Glycerol, Marigold Extract, Beeswax.

Latest research: Macular Carotenoid Supplementation in Subjects with Atypical
Spatial Profiles of Macular Pigment - Nolan. J. M, Akkali. M, Loughman. J, Howard. A. N, Beatty. S. Experimental Eye Research, 101 (2012) 9-15.
Many individuals display atypical and undesirable spatial profiles of their macular pigment (MP), characterized by a lack of the typical central peak.
This study was designed to assess the impact of supplementation with differing formulations on the spatial profile of MP in such subjects.
The typical and desirable central peak of MP was realised following supplementation with a preparation containing MZ, but not with a formulation lacking this carotenoid (Fig 1).
Atypical MP profiles, which reflect a lack of MZ at the macular epicentre, are associated with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This paper demonstrates the need to include MZ in any formulation if the typical and desirable spatial profile of MP is to be realised.
