Macushield has been around a couple of years (supplied by eyebuddy since near the very beginning) but it has recently received a lot of attention as it includes the 3 carotenoids that make up the Macula.
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD or ARMD) causes a loss or vision or even blindness. It is caused by a hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. This deprives the sensitive retinal tissue of oxygen and nutrients that it needs to function and thrive. As a result central vision deteriorates. There are two main types of AMD, which are ‘Dry’ and ‘Wet’. Most people (around 90%) with AMD have the dry form for which there is no categorical proven treatment.
AMD is strongly related to age, hence its name. However, there are many other known AMD risk groups, which include:
- Those with a family history of AMD
- Those with high cholesterol or that struggle to get their 5 fruit and veg a day
- Prolonged exposure to UltraViolet light
- Gender - Women are at a slightly higher risk than men according to research
- Race - Caucasian people seem to be at a slightly higher risk than other races
Some of these things are controllable whilst others are not. Perhaps one of the key elements is diet. Here’s why. The Macula is essential to your vision and it made up of three Macula pigments including Lutein, Meso-zeaxanthin and Zeaxanthin. By eating the foods that include these caroteniods, we are helping to give our Macula a good chance of keeping healthy as low macula pigment density has shown to predispose the individual to AMD.:
· Lutein: found within vegetables like spinach and kale.
· Zeaxanthin: found in yellow and orange vegetables or plants such as corn or squash and dark green leafy vegetables such as kale.
· Meso-zeaxanthin: not usually found in a typical Western diet but is found in some quantities in shrimps and certain fish types like salmon, halibut, trout and sea bass.
Given that many struggle to get their 5-a-day or a sufficient amount of the foods listed above, some people with awareness of AMD or those considered at risk, take vitamins for the eyes/eye-vitamin supplements. There are various brands, some of which have been available, including iCaps, Nutrof, Ocuvite, Macusan and Macushield. Aside from the last, they tend to focus on Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Omega 3 (also good for eyes). Some people have found this to help them. Indeed, your body uses Lutein to make its own Meso-zeaxanthin Mz. Meso-zeaxanthin is at the very center of the Macula where vision is sharpest and is increasingly being hailed as a more powerful neutraliser of free radicals than either Lutein or Zeaxanthin. However, this final ingredient has been patented by Macushield and has been included within Macushield vitamins to ensure complete coverage of all three of the Macular pigment components.
As with all vitamin studies, research tends to take a long time, but there have been some position results from Macushield research. This has shown that the health of the macula can be boosted by 40% after 140 consecutive days of taking Macushield. However, what has grabbed people’s attention is that there have been a number of anecdotal ‘miracle’ stories and a media frenzy of Macushield reviews last December which have seen Macushield not just as a preventive measure against AMD, but as a supplement that actually reverses AMD. The most famous one is retired Optometrist Harry Marsland (we have someone here who worked with him so this is real!) was severely affected by ARMD but recovered 95% of his vision after using Macushield! There have been other high-profile stories such as regarding former Cork Hurler (big in Ireland!) Jimmy Aherne who was told he would be blind in 3 years from AMD but found the Macushield supplement brought his vision back to normal. We have also had customers who have had similar experience. However, the outcome and results will vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.
So, should you buy Macushield? We suggest eating a well-balanced and low-cholesterol diet, and give up smoking (if you do). As some of the key carotenoids of the Macula pigment are not always convenient to find in sufficient quantities within a normal diet, eye-vitamin supplements may be the answer. Given how important most people regard their sight, ensuring your vitamins have the best chance of getting the vitamins they need is crucial. I am 33 and take them myself each day as a preventative measure. However, most of our customers tend to have some onset of AMD.
